History
The Knitt's Hardware legacy stems back almost sixty years to Alfred Knitt. Alfred started Marion Hardware, a Hardware Hank store, in Marion, Wisconsin. Eventually, Alfred’s sons, John, Jim, Bill, and Tom, followed in their father’s footsteps.
In 1973 Bill packed up his family and headed north to St. Germain where he established Knitt’s Hardware. The store was originally located in the strip mall. Several years later, Bill’s son Kent came to work for his father, just as Bill had previously done in Marion. In 1987, Bill acquired another hardware store in Boulder Junction making it the second Knitt's Hardware by name and the third by blood. The Boulder store was originally run by Kent while his sister Krista and her husband Dennis Maurer moved up from Peru, Illinois with their family to take the reins.
In 1994, Bill built the current store in St. Germain. Both businesses, which were neighbors in the mall, moved to their new locations shortly thereafter.
In 1996, Bill sold both his businesses. The St. Germain store was purchased by his son Kent and his wife Terry and the Boulder Junction store was acquired by his daughter Krista and her husband Dennis.
While both Alfred and Bill have passed away, their legacy lives on. Alfred’s son John currently owns and operates Marion Hardware. His grandson Kent owns Knitt’s Hardware in St. Germain, and his granddaughter Krista owns Knitt’s Hardware in Boulder Junction.
